CMAC News update 28th January 2012.
Saturday 28th started a bright sunny day, blue skies, no clouds but cold. If it stays like this it should be a good day. It didn’t of course.
By 10 o’clock John, Kevin and myself were ready to go onto the airfield. I had thought there might have been more members to be there as it was a good morning. We readied our models in the pits, me with my faithful Venus 40 and Cougar 2000 again. John had his Osmose and a “Something Extra” and Kevin brought his small Hawk EDF and a turbine jet, which did not fly today, and a nice looking Mitchell. A twin engine job, with two SC (ASP) .52 four strokes for umpf.
Kevin was first away with the Hawk EDF and when he banked the model into its first turn the port wheel fell off the undercarriage. After flying around a while he brought it in to land and decided to slow right down almost to a stop before dropping the model onto the grass area. As it landed the other main u/c wheel came off. We did not find the first wheel so the model was grounded. Later he flew the Mitchell and what a lovely sound from the twin engines. The second flight of the Mitchell saw a wheel come off on landing. Sounds like a case of “Two wheels on my wagon and I’m still rolling along.”
John flew his Something Extra to get his hand in again after a lengthy layoff and all went well. I took my Venus up, had a good flight and landed safely, but not up to my now better standard. Even though the sun was out intermittently it was very cold in the Northerly wind. Time for a brew methinks. When John flew the Osmose the landing was a bit hard and due to the very flimsy undercarriage the landing allowed the prop to hit the deck and tipped it stopping the engine. John always has a few spares to hand. The second flight with the Osmose went well with a better landing but we had to laugh as when the model stopped on the strip the wing, which is under slung and held on by two screws, dropped onto the runway. Even John was laughing and thought himself, and the plane, lucky it didn’t happen while it was still in the air.
Geb, Ben and Ricky arrived just after 11 o’clock. It was nice to see Ricky at the field as he doesn’t appear there too often. Ricky brought an electric powered glider today and it spent a long time in the air. Bens fleet consisted of the Sebart Angel S and another Sebart model, the Sukhoi. A smaller Extra 260 completed the line up. Geb and Ben also had a pylon racing model with them which is an American class Q40 with a Nelson engine, which Geb has recently rebuilt, to give it some “get up and go”. Geb and Ben brought the racer to put some fuel thro’ to run the engine in before leaving for the US of A in three weeks time to enter into competition there. Phoenix, I believe, is the destination.
Ben was carrying out lots of aerobatic manoeuvres with the Sukhoi including prop hanging, rolling circles, blenders, harriers and many others that both John and myself wish we were capable of. John suggested that if we were to obtain such models with the same setup then we would be able to carry out those manoeuvres too. I wish.
As the wind was picking up and it was becoming a lot colder we decided to pack up and left at 2.00 pm. As we left by the gate to the airfield we saw Trevor, heli pilot, waiting to go on. How was it for you Trevor?
That’s it for this report. Safe flying and good landings to all, whenever and wherever you are.
