New Competitions Dates
CMAC News update 13th July 2008.
After a looonnngg spell of poor flying conditions we finally received good news of a super flying day for Sunday 13th with a dry sunny day forecast and very light winds. Whoopee! So with joy in our hearts the members, Eric, Colin, Barry, Simon, Cedric and Sam, Allan Brooks, Alan H. and myself (Allan), congregated at 10am at the guardroom, only to be told that there was an army exercise being carried out on the airfield and we thought we might have to abandon flying for that day. Allan B. decided, at this point, not to wait for confirmation and went home. Anyway, after a safety briefing, the top brass allowed us onto the airstrip to continue our most enjoyable day. Richard joined us at around noon. We were surprised at the low turnout but assumed some of our members were at Duxford to see the Flying Legends display.
Alan H. flew his Wilga and a helicopter, the chopper engine was giving him some problems and caused a bad landing which did some damage but nothing that was not repairable. Sam flew his Patdancer and Chipmunk. Cedric had the usual Precedent Hi-Boy. A Harrier 3D and a couple of electrics were flown by Simon. On the jet line were Barrys’ F16 and big Boomerang. Erics’ small Boomerang and Colins’ Flash. Barrys’ big Boomerang had a fire in the hole possibly caused by too much wet fuel in the turbine. Your scribe flew his Fantom EDF jet with abandon, it goes better and for much longer now he has new batteries for it. Also in the air was his Piper Cub with Saito 75 on the front. Barry enjoyed a few minutes tootling around with Allans’ Cub too.
Allan had a Top Gun Fast Forward to maiden as well. He admits to setting up the control throws as suggested in the instructions and on high rates found them to be too severe. He also admits to putting in a lot of expo giving very limited control near centre stick. On reflection expo should not have been used. The only way to land this model in this condition was to drop it into the long grass. Fortunately no damage was done. After flight control adjustments a second takeoff was tried but aborted due to a wheel rim splitting causing that wheel to bind in the spat. Weather permitting, and after some mods in the workshop, the Fast Forward will be given another test run next weekend. In the mods to be done is to move the battery back in the fuse from its’ position over the fuel tank to reduce the four ounces of lead I had to add to the tail to balance the model on the suggested C of G.
We decided to leave at 4pm and to that end started packing our gear away at around 3.20 but the jet boys grabbed another flight so we didn’t leave till 4.30.
Thought for the Week:- Why don’t they fit ejector seats in helicopters?
That’s all for now. Hope to see you all again at the field next weekend.

Certificates
The club members would like to congratulate all the club's A certificate holders.
The first member to pass was Sam, one of our junior members, who was flying a "Patdancer" to take his test. This plane is an aerobatic fun model of a design by one of our members and not what people usually use to take their "A" certificate with.
The second member to pass was John, one of our senior members who has been flying for fun for a number of years and never thought of taking an achievement certificate. He was flying a "Super something" to take his test, which was the only plane he had with him that day. This plane is again an aerobatic fun model.
Adam also passed his A certificate earlier this year. Adam is a keen flyer and it seems like he actually welcomes dead stick landings which you are bound to witness at least every second flight.
